Our story

The URWAN project, launched on January 1, 2024, is a forward-thinking initiative co-funded by the European Union through the INTERREG Euro-Med programme. Over the course of its implementation until June 30, 2026, URWAN aims to lead the way in demonstrating innovative solutions for adapting to climate change and addressing water scarcity through a participatory, nature-based approach.

Our partnership comprises 9 organizations from 7 countries, including Italy, Portugal, Spain, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta, and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Led by ANCI Lazio, the association of municipalities in the Lazio region of Italy, URWAN operates through four strategic work packages: harmonizing knowledge on nature-based solutions, jointly developing experimental solutions, co-designing processes for planning, and amplifying URWAN’s impact.

URWAN’s Evolution Over Time

Working closely with pilot authorities and local and regional public bodies, our consortium is committed to providing robust financial and institutional support for the project’s outputs and deliverables. Our collective efforts are geared towards promoting the replication of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in urban settings beyond our pilot locations, engaging local communities in participatory processes, and advocating for the integration of NBS practices into urban policies.

Municipalities hosting pilot NBS installations, such as Ferla, are dedicated to maintaining and ensuring the long-term sustainability of these initiatives. For instance, Ferla plans to allocate municipal resources to expand green areas and enhance ecosystem services for citizens and students.

Together with our local partners in Rome, Larnaka, and Cuba, we are committed to integrating pilot projects into broader infrastructure initiatives and promoting the adoption of NBS practices at municipal and regional levels. By empowering decision-makers and improving capacity in NBS implementation, URWAN seeks to catalyze territorial resilience and climate change mitigation.
