URWAN Final Event in Brussels: Democratic Water Landscapes for More Inclusive Cities

30/05/2026

On 11 June 2026 (09:00–13:15), followed by a study visit to the New European Bauhaus Festival until 18:00, the URWAN project will hold its Final Event in Brussels, hosted at the Lazio Region Office and coordinated by ANCI Lazio. The event will bring together European institutions, cities, project partners, and stakeholders to reflect on the results of the project and discuss the future of water-sensitive and inclusive urban development.

Under the title “Democratic Water Landscapes: co-creating inclusive green spaces with water at the core”, the event will showcase URWAN’s main outputs and methodologies, highlighting how Nature-based Solutions (NbS) can support more resilient, participatory, and climate-adaptive cities.

A platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange

The Final Event will serve as a key moment of exchange within the Interreg Euro-MED community, fostering dialogue between policymakers, practitioners, researchers, and local authorities. The programme will combine presentations, interactive sessions, and strategic discussions aimed at supporting the transferability and long-term impact of URWAN results.

The event will open with institutional greetings from the Lazio Region Administration, followed by Riccardo Varone, Vice-President of ANCI Lazio, and the official opening by Antonella Sberna, Vice-President of the European Parliament.

Presentation of URWAN key outputs

The first session will be dedicated to the presentation of URWAN main project outputs, including:

  • the URWAN Nature-based Solutions Catalogue and Investment Framework (IRIDRA);
  • the Integrated Decision Support System for NbS (Kassandra Project);
  • the Start Park co-design tool (SVI.MED.);
  • the NbS Enabler Pack and Checklist (MedCities).

These tools reflect the project’s integrated approach to planning, designing, and implementing Nature-based Solutions in urban environments.

Co-design and collaborative learning

An interactive workshop will follow, focusing on the co-design of an urban green area using the Start Park tool. The session will be facilitated by IRIDRA and will actively engage participants in participatory design methodologies, reinforcing URWAN’s emphasis on collaboration and co-creation.

Scaling up Nature-based Solutions in Europe and the Mediterranean

After a networking coffee break, the programme will continue with a high-level roundtable dedicated to the continuation and transferability of URWAN results. Moderated by Bernard Massabo (Interreg Euro-MED Institutional Dialogue – Green Living Areas), the discussion will include representatives from FEDARENE, the City of Sarajevo, the Municipality of Ptuj, the Municipality of Cuba, the City of Málaga, the Energy and Environment Agency of Arrábida, and the City of Torino.

The roundtable will provide an opportunity to share experiences and perspectives on the implementation of Nature-based Solutions across different territorial contexts, highlighting challenges, opportunities, and pathways for scaling up.

Closing session and future perspectives

The event will conclude with remarks by Judith Cazas, Project Officer of the Interreg Euro-MED Programme, and final conclusions by Danilo Ceh, representing the Green Living Areas Community.

In the afternoon, participants will visit the New European Bauhaus Festival, where they will engage with innovative practices and case studies on urban regeneration, sustainability, and community engagement. This visit will further connect URWAN outcomes with broader European policy and design frameworks.

Towards democratic water landscapes

The URWAN Final Event marks the conclusion of the project’s formal activities but also the beginning of a wider process of knowledge transfer and community building. By bringing together cities, institutions, and practitioners, URWAN contributes to shaping more resilient, inclusive, and water-sensitive urban landscapes across Europe and the Mediterranean.
